My Mission: The Parrot Lady of Folsom Street

En Español.

Dana Strome, who works full-time in the medical field, is the founder of the Wing Foundation, a parrot rescue group. She owns a house at 2894 Folsom St., between 24th and 25th, which she uses as a sanctuary for parrots whose owners can no longer take care of them.

She finds new homes for the rescued birds or sends them to a permanent parrot sanctuary in Florida. Her goal is to someday sell the house on Folsom to create a true indoor/outdoor shelter similar to the one in Florida.

A recent veterinary bill that, she said, “just killed me,” has forced her to temporarily stop taking new birds, but she will resume once she recovers from the bill.

Strome is grateful to the Mission community for being receptive and welcoming — even though “the birds are very loud!” she said.
