A recent citywide survey on streets found what many Missionites already know: Valencia is pretty awesome.

With 44 favorable responses, Valencia Street shared the honors with the Embarcadero as city residents’ favorite street to walk on. The closest competitors were Market (19) and Noe streets (14). Dolores and 24th streets made it to the top six, with 13 and 10 responses, respectively.

The survey, a collaboration between the city’s Department of Public Health, Planning Department and Municipal Transportation Agency, received 386 responses from residents. It should be noted that District 9, which includes the Mission and Bernal Heights, had 59 respondents — the most of any neighborhood.

Respondents preferred Valencia Street because of its “attractive buildings,” security, and because they saw “other people walking” on it. But the most important reason why respondents like Valencia Street, according to the survey, is its interesting shops.

On the flip side, San Franciscans’ least favorite streets are Market, Van Ness, Mission, Cesar Chavez, Sixth Street, 19th Avenue, Harrison and Geary. These streets, respondents said, are dirty, unsafe and noisy.

Valencia Street speed limit is only 13mph, so you’re less likely to get whacked there than on other streets of San Francisco.
