Friends of Aldo “Trigger” Troncoso, who would have celebrated his 25th birthday today, gathered around a makeshift memorial at 17th and Mission streets, the site where he was gunned down in the early hours of February 26.

Just as they had in the days after his death, friends placed candles and empty beer bottles at the foot of a pole. A photo of Troncoso was taped to the post.

“He’s a friend that won’t be forgotten,” said one man, who wished to remain anonymous. He and several others wore T-shirts with photos of Troncoso’s face on them.

Troncoso was a City College student at the time and a young man who, police said, had been involved in gangs. His murder, a clash between Norteño and Sureño gangs, sparked a series of actions by both police and community organizations to prevent major retaliation.
