Dry Pigment and Ink on Paper.
This second in the series of three works about the loss of life and liberty of African American Sailors at the Port Chicago munitions station. This work reflects a baptism scene. The individuals are looking up toward the sky as if they are asking for assistance, but they are communicating a message in morse code “Am I not a man, am I not your brother”. A phrase featured in 18th century abolitionist literature, that unfortunately still resounded during WWII.
