Police shot and injured a 27-year-old man who was brandishing a knife and breaking windows last night, after attempts to conciliate him were ineffective, police said. The man, who was sent to San Francisco General with gunshot and self-inflicted wounds, is expected to survive.

Officers were called to the Mission District apartment on the 500 block of 14th Street around 7:40 p.m. The call reported that a family member, who had mental health issues, was acting hostile.

The man remained hostile while talking with police. Both pepper spray and a non-lethal extended range impact weapon, which shoots sock-like projectiles, were deployed before officers resorted to shooting him, police said.
