There’s a lot to entertain this weekend:

I’m starting to feel anxious about not getting to the Adobe Bookstore to see Andy Vogt’s show Sustained Decay reviewed here by Hiya Swanhuyser at SFWeekly.

I was so close on Thursday and then forgot.

Tonight there’s Latin Music at the Florida Cafe and the 16th Anniversary Party of Pena del Sur. That’s Florida and 19th. See our audio slide show to get a sense of what this might be like.

Then there’s Heriberto Tito Gonzalez at the Red Poppy at 23rd and Folsom.

On Saturday, there’s a local art show at the Galeria de la Raza and
if this Saturday’s Mission Art and Performance Project is anything like the last one two months ago, you’re in for a good night.

See our audio slide show of the last MAPP here.

It starts at 5 p.m. and goes to midnight and involves 10 to 15 venues. Go to the Red Poppy Cafe at Folsom and 23rd to pick up your map and then enjoy.

Check out our calendar for more details. Updates coming.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
