A Student Thanks his Other Family and Gets Ready for College Life

BY BETTY BASTIDAS

On a recent Friday, nine high school students celebrated their acceptance into college and their other family at Pueblo Nuevo.  They will be the first in their families to attend college and have Mission Graduates––a non-profit focusing on college readiness for youth in San Francisco’s Mission District– to thank for that.  As one student said, “this is like another family but just about college.”

Jerome Pusung, going to San Diego State in the fall, tells us his story.

Betty, this is great! I think you did a really good job of covering Jerome’s story and of distilling what Mission Graduates and College Connect are all about into a short, pithy video.

Thanks Calvin. I’m glad I was able to capture the great work Mission Graduates does with youth. Keep up the good work!

Way to go Betty! Excellent topic! All confusion that the college application process puts immigrant families through definitley hits the 1st generation hard, however, it can also be just as hard for their brothers or sisters following, (with a somewhat softer blow).
College is a difficult process but all that effort definitely pays off in the end. Financial Aid can not be seen as an obstacle, it’s something that will help you step in the right direction towards your dream.
Congratulations to all students who have achieved the first step on their journey!
