While Pay Day lending prospers in the Mission District, the New York Times reports that legislation to tighten regulations over payday lenders has been weakened substantially by giving the agency the ability to write new regulations, but withholding the power to enforce them. Yes, campaign contributions involved.
In better financial news (unless, of course, you’re the bank), the Times reports that the Bank of America said it’s ending overdraft fees. As of this summer, the Times reports, no money in the bank, no purchase.

As extensively reported here and elsewhere, budget cuts have forced City College to shut down its summer school program?
So what, some asked, will the students do with the time off? Jobs.
Why not, a summer jobs program? Good idea? Senate Republicans don’t think so. It costs (wait for it!) a whole $1.3 billion!!!
How is the country going to sustain that kind of debt? Even if it is paid for.

Or health insurance reform, or whatever it is they call it these days. Say what you will about the final bill, missionloc@l has just received word of a new compelling reason for Fighting Nan to jam it through the House as fast as she can: Rush Limbaugh sez if the health care bill passes he will leave the country! CORRECTION: Limbaugh sez he will only leave if the bill passes and the lies he’s been telling come true. Rush, if the manure you’ve been shovelling about health care comes true, the boat outta here is going to be as packed as the emergency room at SFGH on a Saturday night.

Busy day, so in case you’re not scrolling down on our home page, here’s a link to our story on Bars and the No Smoking regulations. You guessed it, the bars don’t like it, but you can hear owners struggling with what they know and what they want.
And, Rigoberto Hernandez covered last night’s hearing on immigrants and Muni. Odd, Muni representatives failed to make the hearing.
Click the links above because the link at the end of this only leads to a repeat. Thanks!
